A further Sand Land manga might be able to do so more successfully, as it never shifted its genre in such a way. Dragon Ball GT tried and failed to replicate the original series' formula, but it was too little, too late.
The classic Dragon Ball manga was a quest very much based on the Chinese tale Journey to the West, though by the time the series shifted to Dragon Ball Z, increasingly epic battles of aliens and gods became the focus. Sand Land could occupy a space that the Dragon Ball franchise once did: pure fantasy adventure. Toriyama would seem to be open to returning to stories that had once been thought to have been completed. It might seem unlikely given the gap of time, but it's important to keep in mind how long the space between Dragon Ball Z and Dragon Ball Super (or even the latter and the infamous Dragon Ball GT) had been. If the movie is successful enough, a further manga or even simple one-shots could expand on what was already shown about the story and its world. At the same time, the manga's story doesn't necessarily have to end where it concluded years ago.
The Sand Land movie is sure to adapt the entirety of the manga, especially given how short it was. Given the pedigree of talent behind the series and the unexplored territory of the story, there's a lot more than can still be done with the world of Sand Land. It's only now gaining more mainstream attention due to its upcoming movie adaptation, which is releasing decades after the manga was released. The series obviously didn't make as much of a splash as Akira Toriyama's other notable work, but it was certainly well-received in its own right. This rather simple concept was told across 14 chapters, making up enough for only one full manga volume. Searching for hydration and intent on restoring peace to the land, Beelzebub and his allies destroy the evil king's monopoly on the element.
To combat a greedy king, the sheriff of Sand Land enlists the aid of the demon prince Beelzebub and his friend Thief. The storyline involves a land ravaged by years of conflict, with water now an increasingly rare commodity. This wasn't due to the series being poorly received or getting a low readership, but simply due to the story wrapping up succinctly. Running in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2000, Akira Toriyama's Sand Land only lasted for a few months.
